How to impress college coaches at showcases
Beginning in the Fall of your sophmore year, you should begin going to
college showcases. We suggest that for your junior and senior years,
you go to as many local college showcases as you can afford to attend.
Many colleges do their scouting for next year's team at these showcases.
To stand out at a showcase, players should:
- arrive at least an hour early - do NOT arrive late
- never walk when you're on the ballfield
- always respond quickly and politely to coaches and their
assistants
- always try to play your best
- never lose your temper
- don't allow yourself to get dehydrated - bring lots of water, Gatorade, etc...
- dress like a ball player; have a good haircut; don't turn your cap sideways or backwards
- be a leader, make friends, encourage others, and have a good time
- if you make an error, don't dwell on it (baseball is a game of errors)
- when throwing to a base: don't double-pump or make a lazy throw
[Note: the coaches will probably be using radar guns & stop watches]
- be prepared to run two 60-yard dashes (under 7 seconds is your goal)
- pitchers:
- when pitching - be aggressive, pick your pitches wisely, and
attack the strike zone
- always throw a fastball as hard (with control) as you can
- your fastball goal is 85+ mph
- keep your breaking balls low
- if you have a sharp-breaking curve ball, this is the time to show it
- do not make wild throws when making pick-off attempts
- infielders: (3B, SS, 2B)
- be prepared to field grounders from the shortstop position and throw to 1B
- when throwing to 1B, always throw quickly and as
hard (with control) as you can
- be prepared to field grounders with a back-handed catch at 3B and throw to 1B
- catchers:
- make fast, non-arching, accurate throws to 2B
- block all wild pitches
- when the ball is hit with no runners on, follow the batter to 1B
- if a ball gets past you, go to it quickly
- outfield:
- get a jump on the ball and move quickly to the ball
- catch the ball with both hands
- be prepared to throw from right field to home plate
- throws to home should be in line with home plate with no more than one bounce
- run (don't walk) to and from your position
